If you need to present a Panamanian Single Status Certificate abroad, the document may need to be authenticated, apostilled and translated before it can be submitted to the receiving authority.

Issued by the Civil Registry of Panama’s Electoral Tribunal, this certificate confirms that no current marriage is registered in the holder’s name.

📄 1. Request the Appropriate Certificate

Before starting the process, confirm whether you need a certificate of unmarried status for general administrative purposes or a single status certificate for marriage.

Requirements vary according to the intended use. For marriage purposes, the application may require a specific form and a stamped list of requirements issued by the authority conducting the marriage. A representative must provide the applicable authorization or power of attorney.

🏛️ 2. Authenticate the Certificate of Freedom to Marry with Panama’s Electoral Tribunal.

For use abroad, the certificate must undergo the applicable authentication procedures at the Electoral Tribunal.

This process verifies the authenticity of the issuing official’s signature. The certificate must be valid and free from alterations, erasures or crossed-out information.

🌐 3. Obtain the Apostille

Once the appropriate authentication has been completed, the certificate can be submitted to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Panama for an apostille.

An apostille allows the document to be presented in countries where the Hague Apostille Convention applies. If the destination country does not use this system, the required legalization process should be confirmed.

🗣️ 4. Check Whether a Translation Is Required

If the receiving authority requires the certificate of no impediment to marriage in another language, confirm whether it needs a certified or sworn translation, who may prepare it, and whether both the certificate and its apostille must be translated.

You should also check whether the translation requires additional authentication.

✓ 5. Confirm the Destination Country’s Requirements

Before requesting a Certificate of No Impediment to Marriage, confirm the following requirements with the civil registry, consulate, or other receiving authority:

  • How recently the certificate must have been issued.
  • The type of certificate required.
  • Apostille or consular legalization requirements.
  • Translation language and formalities.
  • Submission of the original and any supporting documents.
